É una delle personalità di spicco della cultura salentina. È nato aManduria (Taranto) nel 1933. La sua formazione avvenne a Lecce presso l’Istituto Statale D’Arte “G. Pellegrino” sotto la sapiente guida dello scultore Guido Gremigni. Dopo il trasferimento del
maestro fu lui ad occupare la cattedra di scultura, sempre nello stesso Istituto, dal 1952 al 1992.
Gennari è un artista sensibile e tecnicamente consapevole delle infinite potenzialità espressive della pietra che costruisce sapientemente solcandola con un grafismo quasi pittorico. Questa tecnica gli permette di creare delle strutture eleganti, ma nello stesso tempo fortemente plastiche, che captano la luce e la rifrangono nei sottili effetti chiaroscurali. Le sue opere emanano una profonda spiritualità, è come se lo scultore avesse cavato dalla pietra, pazientemente, con lo scalpello e il palmo calloso delle mani, la luce
dell’anima.
Marcello Gennari è il poeta del fervore e della speranza, ma anche della malinconia. Non ha cercato nelle sue strutture compiacimenti estetizzanti né artificiosità intellettualistiche, ma profonda adesione ad un’intima realtà. La sua grandezza sta proprio
in questo, nell’essere riuscito ad ottenere e a risolvere, con tutta umiltà, ma con la tenacia della propria fede, uno dei problemi essenziali
della creatività artistica quello di identità tra vita ed arte. Le sue opere provano che nella scultura c’è posto per la mano e per la mente, per la narrazione e per l’evocazione, per la realtà e la favola, per la razionalità e il sogno. La sua produzione è sparsa tra musei e città italiane e straniere ma è doveroso sottolineare che ha lavorato molto per la sua Lecce,
città da lui molto amata ed interiorizzata. Ricordiamo solo alcune tra le sue opere che gli hanno procurato successo e fama: la struttura che si trova nella sede della Radio Vaticana a Roma, una grande scultura che simboleggia il mondo e le onde dell’etere che gli gravitano intorno; un altorilievo (6 m x 25 m) per la chiesa dei Salesiani, la statua della Madonna alta quasi cinque metri e tutto l’arredo per la chiesa di san Domenico Savio a Brindisi. Ha ricevuto numerosi premi ed attestazioni per la sua indiscussa bravura.

Marcello Gennari is a leading light in Salentine culture. Born in Manduria in 1933, he trained at the Lecce Istituto d’Arte G. Pellegrino under the sculptor Guido Gremigni. When the maestro moved on, it was Gennari who took his place, remaining at the Istituto from 1952 to 1992. A sensitive artist, and one who is technically aware of the infinite expressive potential of form, he constructs skilfully, scoring with a ‘grafismo’ that is almost pictorial. This technique means he can create elegant structures which are at the same time extremely plastic, which capture the light and reflect it to subtle effect. His works are profoundly spiritual, as if the sculptor has quarried patiently from the stone, with his chisel and his
calloused hands, the light of its spirit.
He is the poet of fervour and of hope, but also of melancholy. He has sought in his works neither excessive refinement nor intellectual artificiality,
but a deep attachment to a personal reality. It is in this that his greatness lies, in succeeding to expose and resolve, in all humility but with the tenacity
of his faith, one of the essential problems of artistic creativity: the relationship between life and art. His works are proof that there is a place in sculpture for hand and brain, for narration and evocation, for reality and fable, for rationality and dreams. His sculptures are to be found in museums in Italy and abroad but it must be underlined that he has worked tirelessly for Lecce, the city he has taken to his heart. A work which ensured his fame was the sculpture symbolising the world and the radio waves in orbit around it which is in the offices of Radio Vaticana. He realised a 6m x 25m altorilievo for the church of the Salesians, and a statue of the Madonna for the church of San Domenico Savio at Brindisi. He has received numerous prizes.
